Producer, Director, Writer and Narrator of Not Criminally Responsible: Wedding Secrets

Filmmaker John Kastner has won four Emmy Awards - more than anyone else in the history of Canadian television - for his documentaries FOUR WOMEN, FIGHTING BACK, THE LIFER AND THE LADY (about a convicted killer’s romance with a middle-class woman) and LIFE WITH MURDER (about the agonizing choice two parents must make after their son murders their daughter). Kastner has also won more than 75 international awards for his films, which include NCR: NOT CRIMINALLY RESPONSIBLE, MONSTER IN THE FAMILY, RAGE AGAINST THE DARKNESS and OUT OF MIND, OUT OF SIGHT: INSIDE THE BROCKVILLE PSYCH. He was honoured by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television with the Academy Achievement Award in 2007 and by Hot Docs with a retrospective of his work in 2012.

Kastner’s subjects range widely from the very dark to the very dippy including CHICKENS ARE PEOPLE TOO, about the war between chicken rights activists and chicken farmers; SOMEBODY'S GOTTA DO IT, about people who inflict pain for a living; and ASK A SILLY QUESTION, about polling and market research, for CBC-TV. He often focuses on crime in such films as THE LIFER AND THE LADY (an Emmy-winner for PBS Frontline as well as CBC); for CBC-TV, HUNTING BOBBY OATWAY, PRISON MOTHER/PRISON DAUGHTER and for CTV,  MONSTER  IN THE FAMILY.  A former actor, he co-wrote THE TERRY FOX STORY, starring Robert Duval for HBO, the first US cable TV movie.

John Kastner lives in Toronto.
